Local brewer Greene King has today officially opened its new purpose-built distribution centre, developed by property development company Jaynic on Suffolk Park in Bury St Edmunds. To honour its longstanding commitment to the town, and to commemorate St Edmund the Martyr, the brewer will name the distribution centre St Edmunds.
In 2022, Greene King announced that, given brewery’s growth since the construction of it warehouse facility off Cullum Road in Bury St Edmunds, now is the right time to create a new distribution centre situated close to the A14 to fulfil current and future needs, however, still remain in its hometown.
The St Edmunds Distribution Centre spans 160,000 square feet, which is nearly double the size of the previous centre. The storage capacity is also more than double what was previously available and enables Greene King the opportunity for future expansion and to respond to current customer demands effectively and efficiently.
Greene King has been working hard to ensure there has been a seamless transition in moving operations across sites and future plans for the previous distribution centre are being considered carefully.
The launch of St Edmunds Distribution Centre follows the announcement earlier this year that Greene King has submitted a planning application to West Suffolk Council for a new brewery in Bury St Edmunds.
The submission of the planning application marks the next stage in the project which will see Greene King invest £40 million in a new brewery as it builds on its heritage in Bury St Edmunds having brewed in the town since 1799.
Both investments of the new Distribution Centre and the proposal of a new brewery represent a major commitment from Greene King to British brewing and the local town and the new brewery will be located at Suffolk Park next to the new distribution centre.
The proposal for the new brewery is currently being considered by West Suffolk Council, which will undertake its own period of public consultation before determining the outcome of the planning application.
Matt Starbuck, Greene King’s Brewing & Brands Managing Director, said: “We’re thrilled to be able to say that St Edmunds Distribution Centre is now open and running. It has been two years of dedicated work from our team to create and bring this brand-new facility to life and we would like to thank everyone involved.
“The multi-million-pound investment is a positive change for Greene King, highlighting our commitment to investing in our hometown where we are a major Suffolk business and are proud of our heritage.
“St Edmunds Distribution Centre will unlock exciting opportunities for us supporting the growth of our logistics network and enable us to meet customer needs in an ever-evolving market and we look forward to the exciting plans for Greene King.”
